Gruene Hall has been hosting live music since 1878. It's the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, and it's still one of the best nights out in the entire state. The problem: it's in New Braunfels, about 45 minutes from Austin and 30 minutes from San Antonio. That means someone has to drive — unless you book a party bus.

Gruene Hall is not a theme park version of a Texas dance hall — it's the real thing. Wooden floors, ceiling fans, open-air walls, and a stage that has hosted Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and George Strait. The crowd is a mix of locals, tourists, and everyone in between. There's no dress code, no attitude, and no bad seats. Just cold beer, live music, and two-stepping.
The Gruene Historic District
Gruene Hall sits in the Gruene Historic District, a small collection of shops, restaurants, and bars along the Guadalupe River. Before or after the show, explore Gruene Antique Company, grab dinner at The Gristmill (right on the river), or have a drink at Gruene Tavern next door. Plan at least 2–3 hours in the district beyond the show itself.
Getting There: The Party Bus Advantage
Driving to Gruene Hall means someone in your group can't drink. Uber from Austin runs $60–90 each way for a group, and surge pricing after the show can double that.
